Community Police in Queensland

That the question of Community Police in Queensland and the powers and responsibilities of Community Councils in relation to them be urgently reviewed.

Aboriginal Justice Caucus Assessment

The Aboriginal Justice Caucus confirmed that Recommendation 232 was not relevant to Victoria.

Background

The Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody highlighted major concerns regarding the role of community police in Queensland and stressed the need for a comprehensive review of how community police were employed and trained, as well as their overall role in maintaining law and order. Commissioner Wyvill recognised that existing policing practices had failed and needed to be fundamentally changed.

Actions Taken Since Last Review

The Aboriginal Justice Caucus confirmed that Recommendation 232 was solely the responsibility of the Queensland Government and not relevant to Victoria.
