Engage Aboriginal communities in review of NT project

That in reviewing the Aboriginal Community Justice Project the Northern Territory Department of Correctional Services should undertake extensive consultations with all Aboriginal communities which wish to participate in the program. In pursuing this consultation, care should be given to canvassing the entire range of community opinions and the means by which these may be brought, in any relevant case, to the Court's attention.

Aboriginal Justice Caucus Assessment

The Aboriginal Justice Caucus confirmed that Recommendation 218 was not relevant to Victoria.

Background

In their discussion of the Aboriginal Community Justice Project in the Northern Territory, the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (RCIADIC) Commissioners noted the importance of considering diverse perspectives when seeking advice and the views of Aboriginal communities. They recognised that on law-and-order issues, the perspectives of senior women were likely to be different to those of senior men, which would be different again from younger people.
