Amend the Crimes Act in accordance with Anunga Principles

Legislative amendment to sections 464A(3) and 464C of the Crimes Act, respectively, to require, in accordance with the principles known as the Anunga Principles, an investigating official to explain to an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person in custody in simple terms:

6.1. the meaning of the caution and ask the person to tell the investigating official in their own words, phrase by phrase, what is meant by the caution to ensure that both the right to remain silent and that anything they do or say may be used in evidence is understood; and 6.2. the meaning of each communication right and ask the person to tell the investigating official in their own words, phrase by phrase, what is meant by the rights to ensure they are understood.
