Through Looking Back, Moving Forward, the Aboriginal Justice Caucus (AJC) considered the implementation of recommendations from the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (RCIADIC) in Victoria.
From 2023-2025, the Project Team collated information regarding the implementation of each recommendation from the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.
This background information has been sourced from publicly available sources and perspectives, and through requests to Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and peak bodies with relevant expertise and experience. Relevant government agencies and departments have also been asked to contribute information from their records.
A working group of AJC members considered and discussed the collated background information in light of their own expertise and insights before assessing the priority of the recommendation for further work. This assessment framework considered both the extent of action taken to date and the ongoing relevance and impact of further implementation. The working group’s assessment of each recommendation was taken back to the full Aboriginal Justice Caucus for their review and endorsement prior to publication.
Looking Back, Moving Forward aims to provide a clear picture of where work remains necessary to address issues highlighted by the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths and Custody.
